Welcome to WISCONSIN SEED

SEED stands for the Study to Explore Early Development. SEED is the largest epidemiological study to-date designed to compare children with autism and other developmental delays to children without these delays. Results from SEED will help researchers to better understand the health and behavior of young children with autism and to identify factors that contribute to autism.

SEED is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of the Centers for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research and Epidemiology Network (CADDRE).

What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder.
